The ex-premier soccer league referee, now a SABC sport referee analyst, Victor Hlongwane, pointed out the incorrect decisions made by the referee, Jelly Chavani, who was in charge of the five-goal thriller Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

It was all smiles and disappointments in the Soweto derby that was a sold-out encounter, with over 80 000 supporters singing and dancing in the stadium.

However, the performance of the two clubs and goals were not the only subject of discussion; the incorrect decisions made by Chavani in the game topped the discussion.

During the SABC sport show, Soccer Zone, on Monday evening, the former PSL referee, Hlongwane, pointed out and discussed some incorrect decisions made by Chavani in the game, including not giving away two penalties to the Buccaneers and failing to issue a straight red card for the Kaizer Chiefs skipper, Yasuf Maart, for a dangerous tackle on the Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng in the 12th’ minute of the first half.

Hlongwane believes that Chavani should have sent off Maart after his tackle on Saleng with no hesitation.

“Here's Yusef Maart doing what you call serious foul play, A player who endangers the safety of an opponent by using excessive force or brutality. He got a yellow card from Chavani.

“I don’t know, When Jelly sees this, he must know that this is red,” he said.

Hlongwane then pointed out the two separate missed fouls by the referee inside the Chiefs's penalty area that he thinks should have been awarded to the Pirates as a penalty.

The first incident on the 16’ minute, Tshegofatso Mabasa, was brought down by Msimango in a battle of the Ariel ball.

The same Mabasa on the 36th minute was again brought down by a Kaizer Chiefs player inside the Chiefs's penalty area.

Hlongwane said the two incidents were fouls, and the referee should have given away two penalties to the Buccaneers on 16’ and 36 minute.

“There's a penalty appeal but let's see if Msimango played the ball or the man. There's what we call jumps at an opponent, let’s see if he jumps for the ball or for an opponent.

“Look, he jumps for an opponent, So when a player jumps at an opponent, it's a penalty offense,” said Hlongwane.

“So penalty should have been awarded for jumping at an opponent because there was no intention to play the ball so he played the man and here we play the ball, It's not rugby,” he added.

Talking about the second incident, the former PSL referee said, “ Mabasa put the ball on space, So now when he put the ball on space, the referee clock's proximity.

“Now comes Castillo, When he makes that challenge, did he prevent the player from going to an advantageous position?

“ The answer is yes.”

“So another penalty should have been awarded for preventing an opponent from getting into an advantageous position,” he concluded.
