Mamelodi Sundowns will be aiming to set a new milestone of the longest unbeaten run in the premier soccer league's history when they take on Stellenbosch at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night.
Sundowns are on a mission to become the first ever PSL club to not suffer a defeat in 32 league games. Masandwana are currently equal with Kaizer Chiefs at 31 league games without defeat. Chiefs set this record 18 years ago, in 2005, when they won 15 league games and drew 16.
Sundowns last lost their league game to SuperSport United in September last year. Since then, the Tshwane side have won 25 games and drawn six, having recently defeated Orlando Pirates away from home, who were widely anticipated by many to challenge the Sundowns's dominance this season in the PSL.
Sundowns's head coach, Rhulani Mokwena, says these are the results of the hard work done behind the scenes and gives credit to the players and club's management, including those involved in the day-to-day club operations.
"Lots of praise must go to the entire club. I think when you see, what you see is not just the work of the technical team only, It starts from the senior management and the chairman of the football club for the investment, motivation and the support that they give to us. You know, we have got a lot of hard workers in the institution. These people work very hard. It all goes down to collective efforts," he said.
"This includes the grounds stuff that helps us with the training fields, the kit managers, and the kitchen stuff," he added.
Mokwena's side will also be looking for the brighter side to be the second team after Kaizer Chiefs to win the first eight matches of the season.
Sundowns have won their opening seven games of the 2023/24 Dstv Premiership, scored 14 goals and conceded 2 goals.
